This book is so packed with stuff I want to talk about that I will do a separate post on each chapter. I wanted to hear the stories of people who didn’t hold the power or control the narrative. I wanted to study history because I wanted to know how people lived, and the history classes I took were generally about memorizing dates and the deeds of rich, white men. After a while, I dropped history because I felt like the type of history that mattered to me was often and ironically more prevalent in works of fiction. I started my college career as a double major in history and English. It’s the type of history few of us have really been exposed to.
